You spend at least 8 hours every day at the office. You work with them, chat with them, eat lunch with them, and more — they’re basically your family away from home. But just like any family, creating an environment where these people actually feel like family takes effort. You need to have a shared sense of purpose that everyone is striving to achieve. If you’re feeling stumped, here are some ways to get started:

Foster Productive Open Dialogue

Part of building a team is being able to communicate effectively with one another. This means that all members of the team need to contribute to achieve success. Evaluating employees’ communication skills first can help you determine areas of weakness that may need training. There is a difference between talking to fill the silence and engaging in meaningful conversation. Productive dialogue involves the give and take of ideas. When dealing with hurt feelings, modifiers need to be added to the conversation. This means that one person states how the other person made them feel without laying blame for the situation.

Establish Rules for Interactions

Just as in a family, there must be rules that lay out ways to have positive interactions with each other. There also needs to be clear avenues for how to address grievances. You want your team to feel as though they’re valued. Everyone has something different that they can contribute to the team. Happy New Year – Living Your Life Purpose in 2017

lifeofpurposeIt’s this time of the new year we set intentions for the year ahead. Often they are in regards to something we believe we should quit or something we feel we should begin or do more of. Sometimes we set specific targets we want to achieve, items we hope to acquire and events we want to attend. While this “Resolution Making” is better than not setting any goals or making any plans, they miss the opportunity to create significant lasting change towards a more fulfilling, abundant and joyful life.

With so many articles, blogs, and information about this time of year, it can be overwhelming to know what’s best. Many times people have become frustrated, so they move away from resolutions or setting goals. Yet it is the pause and review that can provide so much clarity.

I believe everything has an ending, and when we take time for reflection and closure, we can begin our next steps with inspiration and a new vision. This applies to relationships, projects, businesses, and everything we interact with or create.

Over the last 20 years I have been inspired to take this time to review, reflect, reset, and then create intentions for the New Year.

I would love to share what that process looks like for me in the hope of inspiring you to create your own year-end ritual or celebration.

Over the years I have worked with different modalities to create an intentional year, such as create vision boards, be a part of burning bowl ceremonies, writing future letters to myself, and so much more. I love all of this stuff!! My favorite things to do are rituals that involve family or community. This holds a greater level of accountability and sense of support.

Many of these are experiences that look to the future and I have discovered that closing out my year has a greater impact on creating an intentional new year.

Every year end I spend time reading Dan Millman’s book, The Life You Were Born to Live – Finding Your Life Purpose. Dan is the author of numerous best-selling books, including the one that he is most well known for, The Way of the Peaceful Warrior. In Dan’s book about life purpose, he has a unique way to look at your life based on your birth date and numerology. At first I was skeptical; however, as I started reading I ended up in tears that someone would understand my life, my strengths, and personal challenges so clearly. It literally describes me and my life to a T. The best part was that it offered a roadmap to navigate through business, life, and relationships with more grace and ease from understanding my life purpose.

So at year end, using Dan Millman’s book, I look at areas of my life that I want to strengthen for the year to come and pick one or two key areas to focus on. I also acknowledge the growth from the prior year’s intention.

It also important to celebrate successes!! Success Breeds Success!

So I make a list of what milestones and successes were accomplished in my life. It is key to look at all areas like personal development and growth. This list can not be too big, so acknowledging the small stuff can make a big impact.

Then I move into creating an intentional year which is a process I learned from one of the most powerful coaches I have ever worked with over 10 years ago. This process allows me to look beyond the “stuff” and more into the type of individual I want to BE. It is beneficial as a stand-alone; however, it brings me deeper into the work of Dan Millman’s above. It touches so many areas of our lives that can be easily overlooked.

So to recap the three key tools that I find fun and inspirational at the end or very beginning of the year (or quarter)…..

  2. Create a list of milestones and successes – acknowledge both big and small accomplishments
  3. Design a plan for my intentional year

This year has been one full of great accomplishments and transformations. From moving into a new home, developing an App for the Business Acceleration Summit, and having a major surgery after years of fear, this past year has been in full motion.

This year I am committed to getting more organized, going on more dates with my husband, then growing my daily physical and spiritual practice. I have been so busy focused on being a new mom again to my now-three-year-old Ryan and building my business these last few years, that it is time to focus on these other areas of my life.

Who I Voted For

The infamous questions prior to an election – Are you planning to vote? Who are you voting for?

The infamous questions after an election – Did you vote? Who did you vote for?

Some are very open about their voting choice whereas others strive to maintain their privacy about theirs. Some elect not to vote at all. There are various reasons as to why people are so open or so reserved with announcing who or what they are voting for. Perhaps some don’t want to engage in a debate with family, friends and co-workers over a matter of difference in opinion. Perhaps some strive for that thorough discussion with others. Perhaps some want to promote their beliefs while others wish not to be swayed in their thoughts.

Was I most recently asked who or what I voted for? Of course! Am I willing to share my votes with you? You bet!!

I vote for businesses to excel. I vote for collaborating. I vote for communities to come together. I vote for single mothers not to feel overwhelmed with trying to run a business and raising her children at the same time. I vote for the welfare of our children. I vote for more family time. But, what I TRULY vote for is for the combination of all.

I stand behind small business owners who network within their community; who have the understanding that coming together as one carries so much further than trying to do things individually. Individually, businesses are a single rain drop in the scheme of things but together they are the storm. Be the storm!

When business owners collaborate with like-minded individuals, the viral effect is for all to excel. I vote for all businesses to adopt this practice. The single mother business owner who networks and collaborates will raise more awareness to her own personal company (and others) which in turn will create personal time for her to enjoy her children. The busy grandfather who spends all of his time trying to generate new leads for financial stability can alleviate his schedule by investing half of his time in group collaboration, thus allowing him more free time to watch his grandson play baseball or his granddaughter perform in her ballet recital.

We are all a product of our environment each bringing with us what makes us unique and when we work together to achieve a common goal within our community we tend to reach and exceed at a much faster rate and reap the rewards in ten folds. Reciprocating services with one another, reaching out to our business neighbor, helping others prosper — all of this aides in bringing our own personal businesses to a higher ground.

I vote for more group effort focusing on what we have in common and how we can serve our community. I vote for all of the sole proprietors to find themselves in the land of majestic professionalism by changing the thought that “sole” means you must do things alone. I vote for branching out and extending that helping hand to others in the business world through group collaboration. I vote for business owners to introduce other business owners to people they know or do business with.

So, today, I tell you where my votes lie. They lie within the overall growth of the world….The growth that YOU can contribute to and be a part of. The opportunity is here and it’s knocking. Answer the door!

Being a Rebel Entrepreneur

(If not – no worries. I shared the full scoop in a recent interview in The Rebel Entrepreneur Summit. You should definitely check it out!) I’ll give you all a little hint, though: the inspiration was born out of a tough time in my life … and then deciding to make a tough and rebellious decision to finally share about it openly & vulnerably.

And, to be honest, that hasn’t felt completely right or authentic to me.

Up Close & Personal with the Candidates

On October 26, 2016 I was selected, along with other leaders of Brevard, to participate as one of the four moderators for the 2016 Brevard County Candidates Forum presented by Space Coast Channel & The Wild Manta Knowledge Center.  Being a business leader in the community I know how important it is for our local politicians to have their voices heard so we can best vote for our personal and local interests.

Although there were many topics of discussion that are important to me on a personal level including our local education and school board and bullying at our public schools, the topic that I was most intrigued to hear how each of the politicians were planning to address was the health of our youth through student lunches. I personally asked “With children’s illnesses, diabetes and obesity at an all time high, how will this be dealt  with in our schools and with lunches?”

I was thrilled to hear that Michelle Obama’s nutrient movement has been implemented into our local school lunches. I was also very grateful to hear other important topics regarding are children brought up by a couple of other candidates like Randy Foster who is running for County Commission, District 3 . Randy shared how we currently have over 1,200 homeless children in Brevard going without food. That figure is astronomical and truly hurts my heart to know we have so many without food and shelter.

​​Darcey Addo for Brevard School Board, District 3 was a mother and teacher that I found I related most to. Every topic she addressed I was actively intrigued by.  Darcey talked about having to educate children about the importance of healthy lunches as childhood obesity is on the rise. Another thing Darcey addressed was the challenge of differentiating structured recess from simple playtime for kids and the importance of allowing kids a 20 minute unstructured recess. She feels as though this is lacking from children’s lives and argues that it is vital to the overall growth of a child to have that moment of tranquility away from the stress that studies bring. As a mother of two teenagers, I am proud that my children are among those that participated in an excellent educational program that emphasized recess being a key part of one’s success and am in agreement with Darcey on the necessity of this for all of our youth rather than the continuous favor of reduced recess due to more and more testing. Children are, after all, our leaders of tomorrow!

School issues and development were not the only topics mentioned. We heard discussions about the lagoon as well as various environmental topics that need to be addressed. It is refreshing to know that our local politicians are aware of our environmental struggles and are compiling resolutions.

Another area of concern fell among local businesses and how we can all help local businesses improve within Brevard, rather than paying big businesses to come to Brevard.  There are current incentives for big businesses to come into our community and a number of individuals would  rather like to see more money going to local business expansion. I am among one of those eager to help the little guy and always do my best to support the locals.

Overall, my experience as a moderator was valuable. I enjoy being an active member of our community and strive to encourage others to do the same. Together we are powerful unit and have the ability to beautify the community we live in. Thank you to all of the local politicians for vigorously aiming for a brighter tomorrow.

Tips for a Successful Elevator Pitch – Engagement

MediaMagic Elevator PitchWhile an elevator pitch needs to be short & to the point, it must also feature a well-defined objective. Every example used and point made must work to complement the point that’s being argued during the pitch. For instance, if a job aspirant starts a discussion with a possible employer during a career fair, then their elevator pitch must rotate around why they’re the best person for the job.

Prior to creating an elevator pitch, it’s crucial for you to actively envision the intended goal of the dialogue & formulate an objective from there.

The next step must be to explain how you’re going to accomplish your intended goal. For example, a job candidate must highlight the experiences and skills which make him/her the best person for the required position. Most professionals find this part of the elevator pitch quite challenging and end up losing their focus.

You want each single step of your elevator pitch to strengthen or support the proposed goal of the talk.

Lastly, it’s important that you let your intended prospect know why their role is so important for you to attain your goal. For instance, if the intended objective of your pitch is to acquire an investor for your company, then you want to emphasize how the investor’s assistance can benefit your company.

It’s critical that your elevator pitch is specific & crafted in a way such that your target audience knows why they’re invaluable for accomplishing the final goal.

Developing an Elevator Pitch – First Impressions Matter

Elevator-PitchIn simple words, an elevator pitch is a brief presentation that’s designed to grab the attention of potential prospects in a compelling and comprehensive manner.

So, if you had one minute with Oprah or someone you admire in your industry, what would you say to capture their attention?

Criteria for a successful elevator pitch:

It must be Quick, Clear, and Concise! Attention grabber is important too.

Be clear; use a proper speed & tone so that you avoid rushing your message.

Show your enthusiasm using appropriate excitement while telling the story. Enthusiasm plays a key role if you want to draw the attention of your target audience.

 

Does your elevator pitch answer the following questions…..

Who are you?

What do you do?

Who is your target audience?

What separates you from other businesses in your industry?

How do you bring value and benefits to your prospects?

 

Get a note card and have a 30-sec and 60-sec elevator pitch ready. Then start to practice and test to see what sticks. This is one area I love helping my clients shine!!!

7 Fundamentals for Your Press Kit

press kit Media MagicA media or press kit is an essential part of your marketing strategy as it allows the media to take a look at your body of work instantly so that they can make the decision to run your press release quickly without needing to do much outside research.

You want to make your press kit a vital part of your business. It is important these days that your press kit is available both physically as well as electronically.

Here are the fundamentals for every press kit:

1. Articles written by you

Include any previous articles you have written in the past along with the press kit. This will show instant credibility, help you stand out from the crowd, and showcase your writing style and area of expertise. If you are online, you may want to include some of the positive reviews of your blog as well, showing the relevance and interest of customers.

2. Articles written about you

It is always more powerful if a third party expert is talking about you rather than you promoting yourself. If you have come across any articles written about you, add them in your press kit.

3. Power Bio

Make sure your power bio is concise and to the point. In my 12-step power bio complimentary guide, you will find all the details to create a bio that stands out. Offer relevant info about your current field whenever possible. Also, you can add something about your partner, kids, or possibly your interests in a single sentence; however, avoid writing an entire paragraph about them.

4. Action Photos

Pictures are a great way to tell a story and engage readers. Action photos are what the media is looking for to include in articles. Many people believe that a headshot is the most important and, although it is very important, having a shot of you doing what you do in action gains the most attention. A high resolution image of at least 300dpi is required for any print media. Do have an updated headshot as it is needed; however, action photos hands down get picked up and printed more times than a headshot.

5. Press Release

Professional and compellingly-written press releases are one of the most important elements of a press kit. Add your website URL within the press release for additional reference.

6. Other related press clippings or endorsements

These may include quotes from authors, newspapers and magazines, and experts in your industry. Endorsements are great. It is important to include the name of the person, title, & association. Idea endorsements can be powerful; when other experts in the field are agreeing with your point of view, it adds credibility to you!

7. Company Marketing Pieces

You can also consider creating a customized pocket folder in order to distribute your info, along with the business cards, slip sheets, tri-fold brochure, etc. These can help you position yourself and your brand as an expert in your industry. Include your speaker sheet if you want to attract speaking opportunities.

Your goal in creating a suitable press kit must be to offer all of the important info which the media needs if they decide to write about your product/service. Make sure you’ve made the job of the media person easier. A professional, attractive, and informative press kit can really set you apart from the competition.
